Overly Utopian Dreams
Abstract Digital Worlds and Speculative Visions
Dreaming in colour, texture, and technology
Overly Utopian Dreams is a deeply personal and evolving series that traces my journey into digital imaging—back to the early days of experimentation, when I first began discovering the creative potential of the tools I had access to. It all began with a mix of excitement, determination, and a drive to learn: watching YouTube tutorials, browsing online resources, and trying out techniques that sparked my interest.
Those were thrilling times—full of trial and error, happy accidents, and moments of pure wonder as my ideas came to life in ways I never expected. Sometimes, I could even sense when something beautiful was about to unfold.
These abstract digital illustrations explore dreamlike environments, pushing the boundaries of perception and imagination. They are open enough to allow for individual interpretation, like an adventure in a second life, exploring its outer limits with digital imaging tools. Generated from scratch, each work sometimes begins as a freeform digital illustration and evolves through experimentation with colour, layering, and texture, ultimately pulsing vibrant rhythm and movement—melting textures, fluid patterns, and distorted geometries that feel alive and ever-shifting.
They draw you into surreal ecosystems where emotion, memory, and digital creation meet. From radiant waves and fractal blooms to psychedelic grids and molten terrains, this collection reflects my ongoing journey with a visual language shaped by play, instinct, and endless possibilities of digital storytelling.
IZA WANDERMENTS
Some of the works from this series was first presented at the Young Talent 2015 exhibition at the National Gallery of Jamaica. It was an open call where artists submitted proposals, which were then reviewed and selected.
I was one of ten artists chosen—my first significant exhibition— where I had the opportunity to work with Monique Barnett-Davidson, who was the Assistant Curator at the NGJ and now is the Senior Curator. She is an exceptional educator and museum professional. While working with her, I learned so much and received strong support from the NGJ’s Education Department to get the work done the way I wanted, using the resources available.
Thank you all!
Young Talent 2015 was the sixth installment of what became a biennial series of exhibitions, designed to provide national exposure to up-and-coming artists and to stimulate the development of Jamaican art in the process.
Overly Utopian Dreams isn’t bound by a fixed destination. It drifts, it mutates, it lingers — mirroring how I move through both technology and emotion. This series is a reminder that process is power — that beginnings are often small and unsure, but they carry the weight of becoming.
Through pixels, patterns, and poetic logic, I’ve built something that feels like home in motion. And this is only one chapter. There’s always more to make, more to feel, and more to uncover.
